Clean Sky CARING project - Because we care!
OpenAirlines is the coordinator of the Clean Sky CARING project (Contribution of Airlines for the Reduction of Industry Nuisances and Gases).
Clean Sky is the largest research project worldwide on the future of an aviation-friendly aviation, with 1.6B€ to be spent in research and development in the next 6 years.
The OpenAirlines-led consortium comprising Airlines (Airlinair, Transavia and the TUI Group: Thomson Airways, TUI,…), Airline associations (FNAM), Universities and Research Labs (ENAC), and expert SMEs (Envisa, Icon, and SustainAvia) has been awarded the only airline-related topic in the first call for projects, recognizing our contribution, commitment and innovation to the airline environmental matters.
The goal of CARING is fourfold:
- Gather and analyze FDR data from a wide variety of actual flights to evaluate their current environmental impact (CO2, NOx, CO, HC emissions and noise) and compare them with what could be obtained with optimized trajectories of future aircrafts.
- Survey current and future environmental constraints worldwide.
- Understand the costs of environmental constraints for airlines, how they compare to other costs, and how airlines adjust their strategies or operations to these constraints.
- Build an economic model for air transport that takes into account the environmental constraints.
The consortium will invest almost 1M€ in the next two years to pursue this research.
OpenAirlines will reuse the CARING findings to improve its Environmental offering.
